Tracking your natural cycle
Sometimes having a detailed understanding of your fertility cycle can be all you need to start planning for and becoming pregnant. But do remember, the process can take some time.
If after a few months you continue to experience difficulties, or if you’re not sure, talk to your GP about your fertility cycle and obtain a referral to Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility. Once you have your referral, we can book an initial consultation for you.
After your initial consultation with an Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility fertility specialist, you will meet one of our fertility nurses, who will help you customise your fertility plan around your fertility cycle.
Pinpointing the right time during your cycle to try for a pregnancy is sometimes all you will need to do.
During cycle tracking, we will help you establish the pattern or rhythm of your cycle and identify when you are ovulating by performing ultrasound scans.
Your fertility nurse will then liaise with your fertility specialist, and you will be advised of the best time to try for a pregnancy.
A typical fertility cycle with Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility
On the first day you have your period, call Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility on 08 8272 7755.
Between Day 12 and Day 14, attend Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility for a scan with a sonographer. An Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility fertility nurse will be with you and will liaise with your fertility specialist. A blood sample will be taken, and follow-up samples and scans may be organised.
On Day 21 you may need to have a blood test to check your progesterone level (to confirm ovulation). Progesterone is a hormone produced once ovulation has occurred, and helps to support a pregnancy in its early stages.
Between Day 28 and Day 35 (depending on the length of your normal cycle)—your period would normally be due. If you have not had your period, do a home urine-based pregnancy test. You should call Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility with your result on 08 8272 7755. Should the result be negative, or you get your period later than normal, your fertility specialist will advise you of your next step.
It may be necessary to track more than one cycle to establish your cycle pattern—if you have any concerns, please call Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility on 08 8272 7755.
