Inter Uterine Insemination

GETTING PREGNANT BY INTRA-UTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

Intra-uterine insemination (IUI) helps increase the amount of fertile sperm reaching the uterus as it bypasses the cervix and is inserted straight into the uterine cavity.

The sperm is prepared by selecting only the best-formed and most mobile sperm, which further improves the chance of conception. After the sperm has been prepared, it is artificially inseminated into the uterine cavity using a speculum and catheter. This only takes a few minutes in a process described by many women as no more uncomfortable than a pap smear.

Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility offers several procedural options for intra-uterine insemination.

NATURAL CYCLE INSEMINATION

This IUI treatment method follows the natural menstrual cycle and does not involve any medication. This is a successful option for conception with sperm of good quality. It is also an option for people who are unable or do not wish to have intercourse.

CLOMIPHENE CITRATE OVULATION INDUCTION

With this IUI method, medication promotes ovulation. The use of this medication has been shown to increase pregnancy rates over natural IUI cycles.

FOLLICLE-STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH) OVULATION INDUCTION

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) ovulation induction has been shown to increase pregnancy rates over both a natural IUI cycle and a clomiphene IUI cycle. This option requires close monitoring to avoid overstimulation of the ovaries.

Your Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility fertility specialist can discuss if IUI is a good option for you, any potential complications in your case, and help you decide if you would like to proceed with this treatment option.
