Your first trimester
When you phone Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility to make a booking we will arrange your first consultation for somewhere between the seventh to tenth week of your pregnancy. You are welcome to arrange a first appointment earlier, particularly if you are concerned about any early pregnancy problems.
At the booking or first visit we will:
- Discuss your medical history, general health, and answer your questions about antenatal care.
- Do your first pregnancy ultrasound and check your estimated due date.
- Arrange for you to have an initial set of antenatal screening blood tests and discuss other screening tests you may wish to have.
The first trimester of your pregnancy is a very exciting and emotional time. A number of physical symptoms are also experienced to some degree by most women.
It is normal to feel very fatigued. Many women find they need to go to bed much earlier than usual, and take daytime naps when possible.
Although the fetus is only tiny at this stage, your body systems are undergoing huge changes to prepare for the task of growing and supporting your baby. The majority of women experience some degree of morning sickness, including nausea and vomiting, which can occur at any time of day and night.
Be reassured that your baby is very good at taking what it needs to grow from you, even if you are unable to tolerate much food.
Some women also experience reflux, constipation and breast tenderness. Don’t worry, most of these symptoms subside and you will glow as your first trimester symptoms start to settle.
