Your second trimester
The second trimester is often the most enjoyable part of pregnancy as your energy returns, the nausea subsides, and you really start to look pregnant.
Most women are aware of a bump from about 12 to 14 weeks after their last period. By 20 weeks, most women have started to feel their baby moving. It may feel like a flutter or gas, and might not happen every day at first.
Two ultrasounds are done during the second trimester. These are the nuchal translucency scan at 11-14 weeks, and the morphology ultrasound at 19-21 weeks. We will see you after both of these scans to talk about the results.
During the second trimester we see you every four weeks, but there is no need to save all your queries for your clinic visits. You can always call us on 08 8272 7755 between appointments with any questions or concerns.
If you are planning to attend antenatal classes, book them during your second trimester as they fill up quickly. Ask our friendly staff about our antenatal classes by calling 08 8272 7755.
At around 28 weeks you will have a second set of blood tests to screen for diabetes (the oral glucose challenge test or OGCT), anaemia and blood group antibodies.
If you are intending to travel overseas at this time, please read the fine print of your policy to check that your travel insurance covers pregnancy, as most insurance companies will not cover you for pregnancy-related problems after about 26-28 weeks.
If you are working, you will need to start planning when you will transition out of the workplace.
If you have other children, you may need to start planning for their care around your estimated due date too.
If you have any concerns during your second trimester, please call Adelaide Obstetrics & Fertility on 08 8272 7755.
